1 woman dead, teen hurt after being hit by car

Nova Scotia increasing some fines for drivers hitting pedestrians

A woman is dead and a male teenager was rushed to hospital after being struck by a car in the city's northeast, according to police.

The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. in the area of Don Mills Road and Barber Greene Road when two vehicles collided. One of the drivers — behind the wheel of a Saturn sedan — lost control of their vehicle, mounted the curb and struck the pedestrians on the sidewalk, according to police.

The teen was taken to hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition. One of the drivers was also taken to hospital, police said.

"It was horrible. Let me tell you, I'm still shaking," said Marta Kallianos who was waiting at Don Mills and Barber Greene Friday morning when she saw the accident.

TPS unit commander and Supt. Neil Corrigan said police will not be releasing any further information about the victims until their next of kin are notified. It is not clear if any charges will be laid against either of the drivers, he said.

A Traffic Services reconstruction team is on scene investigating with the assistance of police and paramedics, Corrigan said.

Barbara Brown, who lives in the area, told CBC News that traffic has increased significantly since a number of new developments were completed nearby the intersection.
