106-year-old N.L. woman sustained by pizza, fries

A southern Newfoundland woman who celebrated her 106th birthday this weekend with family and friends is not shy about food choices that are not usually associated with healthy living.

Margaret Ellen Moores was the life of her own party on Saturday in Rushoon where she told four successive generations in her family that God must have plans for her to stick around.

"He put me here, I suppose, and that was it. I had to stay till I went," Moores said during the party. "I'm after being to the door a few times ... He told me to go away, there was no place there for me yet."

Her daughter, Mary Cheeseman, said genetics must play a role in her mother's longevity — and certainly not the foods closest to her heart.

"She loves her sweets. She never drank water in her life," Cheeseman told CBC News.

"[She loves] her salt beef, the same old-time meals as ever she had … She loves her pizza and French fries now. So it's not her diet is it?" she said with a laugh.

Moores, who has 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. can recite poetry she learned from a reader she used 100 years ago, has vivid memories of a 1929 tsunami that swamped southern Newfoundland, and recalls how she travelled by boat to St. John's at 17 to work as a maid.

Moores, whose only medication is a daily dose of Tylenol for arthritis, has her own theory of survival: hard work when she was young, and plenty of fun after she retired.

"Good times I guess, when I got old. I didn't have them when I was young," she said.

"[I] got so fond of them, I couldn't let them go."

Good on her! As long as she still wishes to be here. I wonder what makes people want to live to be very aged, unless you are in good health and are enjoying life still. I lost the will years ago, but I'm still around through no action of my own. She must be a very special person, so once again, good on her.

So much for the organic carrot chomping, vitamin fetish crowd.
There is one key factor for most people who live over the 100 year marker. Attitude towards life and not getting overly stressed by the anxiety of life.

      What a great read.
This lady proves a great attitude to the positive and a selection of good old mother nature provided foods is the only way to go.
Mother nature includes lots of meat....for our Vegitarian friends to understand.
      God Bless you Margaret.
You are 1st class in my book!

"selection of good old mother nature provided foods" She doesn't drink water and lives on salted beef, pizza, french fries and sweets. I can follow you on your hit to vegetarians. But candy, soft drinks, pizza, french fries and salted beef are NOT good old mother nature provided foods. Just goes to show you how ignorant these doctors, dietecians, and self proclaimed dietary experts really are about what truly makes the human body healthy.

you never know.. i know guys who led a clean life,, no smoking ,, no drinking , proper exercize,, dropped dead of a heart attack at 42.. see others who smoke,, eat poorly, don't exercise and live to 99.. Seems to be no real conclusion. Although i would bet on a healthy lifetstyle verses an unhealthy one.

it,s not drinking water that is the answer,my grand mother 103,and grand father 101 never drink water

So? I have my entire family for the last 500 years to prove that food choice is not all that it cracked up to be. It's not a carrot that will save your soul it's your hearty DNA!

Hang in there Granny. You've been around longer and saw alot more then most of us ever will. Eat what pleases you and don't let some "know-it-all" dietician tell you what you should and shouldn't eat.
