10th increase in a row for gas prices

Gas prices climbed again Thursday across Newfoundland and Labrador, marking the 10th straight week that motorists have had to dig a little deeper to cover a fill-up.

The Public Utilities Board raised the ceiling on gas prices by up to 1.4 cents per litre. The change may be slightly less in some areas of the province because of rounding for taxes.

The new price setting means that retailers on the Avalon Peninsula, for instance, can now charge up to $1.092 for every litre of self-serve unleaded gas.

Some retailers, though, charge considerably less.

Gas prices have climbed about 17.5 cents since the end of February, and are now the highest they have been since last September.

Diesel costs jumped 2.1 cents per litre.

Home-heating fuel also rose noticeably, with a 1.82-cent increase in both furnace oil and stove oil.
