Two teens had to be plucked from the cold waters of Lake Erie before dawn Monday.
The United States Coast Guard had to rescue the boys after the duck blind they were using drifted out into the lake in the Rondeau Bay area.
The boys didn't have life-jackets or a means to navigate the blind. They used a cell phone to call police as they were adrift.
But when police arrived the boys were not visible from shore. They had drifted three kilometres from shore.
That's when members of the the Chatham-Kent OPP called the coast guard.
Members of the coast guard lifted the boys from the water into a hovering helicopter and flew them to the Chatham airport. A waiting ambulance took them to Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Hospital where they were treated for the effects of hypothermia.
Police said the boys are lucky to be alive. The boys had no motor or paddles on their floating duck blind.
"If not for their cellphone call [Monday] morning, this situation could have ended very tragically," OPP spokesperson Sgt. Dave Rektor said.
