2 fires burning close to Inuvik, N.W.T.

The smoke from the fire created very hazy, fog-like conditions in the town on Sunday.

Two forest fires are burning less than 10 kilometres away from the town of Inuvik, N.W.T.

Both fires, which were sparked by lightning, are creating a lot of smoke which is visible in town.

Martin Callaghan, the acting manager of forests with the territory’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources, said the fires do not present any immediate danger and residents don’t have to worry.

Two water bombers are currently fighting the fires, and another two water bombers are on the way from out of town. Two helicopters are also helping by dumping water on the flames.

There are also extra fire crews in Inuvik from out of town. So far, those crews are letting the water bombers do the work and are there in case the fire threatens anything in town.
