Gunfire exchange wounds 2 Alberta RCMP officers

RCMP Sgt. Tim Taniguchi said they are still investigating the gunfire that injured two officers early Sunday morning.

Two RCMP officers were transported to an Edmonton hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after an exchange of gunfire outside a home near Breton, Alta., early Sunday morning.

RCMP Sgt. Tim Taniguchi said one of the officers has superficial wounds. The other has more serious injuries.

At a news conference Sunday afternoon, Taniguchi said the two officers were both from Red Deer. One has 10 years experience with the RCMP and the other is a 30-year veteran of the force.

On Saturday at roughly 5:20 p.m. MT, Breton RCMP received a call from a 35-year-old man who had been shot near a rural residence, 18 kilometres west of the village, located southwest of Edmonton. The man received non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP attending the scene secured the area with help from the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), police dogs and an Edmonton police armoured vehicle. Neighbours near the home were evacuated from the area.

Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, an exchange of gunfire between police and individuals from the residence occurred, police said. Two ERT members were shot and injured and were transported by STARS air ambulance to an Edmonton-area hospital.

RCMP continued to negotiate with people inside the residence and, at roughly 10:45 a.m., a woman and man were taken into custody. The pair also had non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to hospital, said police

The Serious Crimes Branch has arrived on scene to investigate. In addition, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is there to investigate the circumstances and action taken by police.
