3 barns north of Moncton destroyed by fire
Three barns at a farm north of Moncton were destroyed by fire overnight.
The Moncton fire department got the call around 10:45 p.m.
While on the way to Scotch Settlement Road, about 20 kilometres north of the city, firefighters learned that a second barn had caught fire on the property.
Platoon Chief Rob Brine says two fire engines and two water tankers from Moncton arrived shortly afterwards.
"When we arrived on scene, the third barn had just started to catch fire, " Brine said.
"So at that time we decided, there was three buildings on the property: a house; a large tool, equipment barn and a workshop. So we decided to go into defensive to protect those three buildings,"
Brine said it was not worth the risk to fight a fire that was already lost.
People were in the home, but managed to get out without injury before firefighters arrived.
There were no animals in or around the barns at the time of the fire.
The Dieppe Fire Department also sent a third tanker truck to help the Moncton firefighters.
Brine said it took about five hours to put out all the hot spots.
"Two of the barns were steel sided and roofed. So when it collapsed on itself, everything that was burning underneath that steel, we had to dig through to get the fire out, because it was still smoldering underneath," he said.
"So there was no way to put the fire out just by putting water running over the steel,"
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
