5 fun things to do in Windsor-Essex this weekend

5 fun things to do in Windsor-Essex this weekend

Last week, CBC's Mike Evans promised some activities to jump start the spring season. But the cold and windy weather didn’t cooperate. Instead of enjoying some beautiful weather, many were stuck inside.

For this weekend, here are five events that even cold weather won’t stop.

Vaudeville Windsor

Before radio, movies and late-night TV, audiences were entertained by vaudeville performers. Much like The Tonight Show, vaudeville features several different performers singing, dancing, juggling and telling jokes.

Sunday night at 8 p.m., the Dominion House Tavern, at 3140 Sandwich St., is hosting its own vaudeville performance with magician Bill Nuvo, comedian Jonny P, singer Bobby Sproat and actor Rob Tymec, who promises “lingual concoctions of an enthralling nature.”

These are all local performers and it promises to be a great night.

Windsor on the Floor!

This might be the only place you’ll be able to find square dancing and Celtic music west of Cape Breton.

The Cape Breton Club of Windsor is hosting its spring dance on Saturday night from 8 p.m. till 1 a.m. at the Scottish Club on Tecumseh Road.

The main band will have two fiddlers and a piano for Cape Breton set dancing. Two young fiddle players will also be featured.

Fiddle player Kenneth MacLeod said if you decide to wear your kilt, you probably won’t be alone.

North American Bike Show

If you can get across the Detroit River this weekend and you’re a bicyclist, this event is for you.

There will be more than 100 vendors, a BMX bicycle course, a bike swing, a swap section for buying and selling and much more.

If you’ve got an awesome bike, bring it along. There will be prizes for the best vintage, best low rider, best paint job, best race bike, best city bike, and the grand prize for the best overall bike in show.

It’s at Cobo Hall on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

M.A.S.H. BASH

If “Hawkeye," “Hot Lips” and “Trapper John” mean something to you, then you'll want to be at the Tilston Armoury, at 4007 Sandwich St., where there will be a charity event based on the popular TV show M.A.S.H.

There will be a "Kling-Off" to see who has the best impersonation of the character Max Klinger, the famous, funny cross-dresser from the show, as well as dinner and live music.

The proceeds are all going to benefit the Canadian military and their families.

If you have trouble finding the armoury, just cruise down Sandwich Street until you see the building with a tank on the front lawn.

Poetry Slam at Milk Coffee Bar

The St. Clair College Gay-Straight Alliance is hosting a poetry slam from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday at Milk Coffee Bar.

The event is open to all, and musical guests are welcome. The loose theme is perseverance, whether that be overcoming a major hurdle or just getting through the daily grind.
