5 things to do around Windsor-Essex this weekend

If you're not quite sure what to do this weekend, the CBC's Mike Evans has some event suggestions for you happening in the Windsor and Essex County areas.

Polenta Festival

It's a two-day celebration starting Friday night at the Fogolar Furlan club, building up to an attempt to regain the Guinness World Record for largest polenta. A town in Italy that took the title from Windsor in 2012.

If people want to see the attempt of making the world's largest polenta, it takes place Saturday between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Fogolar Furlan club in Windsor.

The McGregor Beer Festival

This is the third year for the event and it keeps getting bigger, with about 1,500 people expected this year.

Twelve breweries are taking part, including some familiar names such as Walkerville, Flying Monkey and Bayside Brewery.

The popular Windsor band Big Wiggle will be the musical entertainers for the evening and they're also having a fun run called the "mug and run."

The McGregor Beer Festival takes place Saturday in McGregor starting at 2 p.m. and last call is at 11 p.m.

Phog Phest 6

Phog Lounge owner Tom Lucier held the Phog Phest outdoors for the first four years, but last year he took the fun inside, where it's guaranteed to be dry and where the acoustics for the bands are the best.

Bands such as: Orphan Choir, Sarah Smith, Eric Welton, The Spice Boys and the Headliner Born Ruffians —41 bands in total will take the stage.

It kicks off at noon Saturday and goes all night until 2 a.m. at the Capitol Theatre.

Vintage in the Village

It's being put on by the Pillette Village BIA and is based on a very intriguing idea.

Everything about this event is vintage: vintage cars, vintage calendar models, dancing demonstrations, antiques, retro art, retro furniture, clothing and jewellery, even the entertainment is vintage with an Elvis impersonator.

People can shop around and look for unique collectibles and one-of-a-kind items.

It's at Windsor's Pillette Village neighbourhood Saturday from 10 a.m. and runs til 5p.m.

The Festival of Hawks

Anyone who loves birds will love this event, there are banding demonstrations, birding workshops and birding hikes.

Holiday Beach is ranked one of the best hawk watching areas in all of Canada and one of the top three in all of North America.

This event runs for two weekends starting Saturday. It takes place at the Holiday Beach Conservation Area in Amherstburg.

The festival begins at 9 .m. and runs until 3 p.m. both day this weekend and next.
