Abbotsford car dealership trashed by 'demolition derby' thief

A car thief who was out on parole is back in prison after police in Abbotsford, B.C., interrupted a one-man demolition derby at a used car lot, officers say.

The incident began when a patrol officer heard the sound of an engine at the Windmill Auto Sales on South Fraser Way and Garden Street about 12:25 a.m. PT Tuesday, police said.

When the officer arrived he spotted a man in a car allegedly crashing into other vehicles in the lot.

The officer called for backup and tried to stop the man, but the driver allegedly kept ramming vehicles in a desperate attempt to escape.

When that failed, the man then drove towards the officer, just missing him, said police.

The 31-year-old man was eventually arrested by several officers and was returned to a correctional facility, but not before allegedly damaging a total of eight vehicles.

He is now facing charges of dangerous driving, assault with a weapon, mischief, possession of stolen property and possession of a break-in instrument.

The man's identity has not been released, but police say his criminal history includes theft of auto, fraud, possession of stolen property and uttering death threats.
