    Accused serial abuser brought to Alberta to face charges

    A man accused of abusing numerous Alberta women he met on online dating sites appeared in court Wednesday to face 43 charges including aggravated sexual assault and assault with a weapon.

    Shannon Bradford Dixon, 34, was returned to Stony Plain after serving a 10-month sentence Ontario on assault charges.

    Alberta RCMP also charged Dixon with bestiality, extortion, uttering threats and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

    Investigators said they have identified seven victims — from Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, Grande Prairie and Calgary — but believe there may be more.

    Dixon is originally from Newfoundland, but has lived in various areas of Canada over the past several years.

    Dixon, who also uses the surname Mercer, frequented online dating sites to lure women, then becoming increasingly physically and sexually violent, police allege.

    Police believe Dixon took intimate photos of women, and then threatened to post them on the internet unless they paid him money.

    One woman claimed Dixon had extorted more than $300,000 from her.

    Dixon is in custody and will appear in Stony Plain provincial court Jan. 25th.
