Accused in street racing trial denies speeding

A man on trial for dangerous driving in the 2010 crash that killed 18-year-old Christian Williams disputed that he was racing, saying he was only driving 50 kilometres an hour at the time of the collision.

Kareem Alli, now 19, told an Ottawa court he had no interest in racing his friend, Christian "Sisco" Williams, on June 22, 2010. But he said Williams was determined to race.

Alli and Williams were driving their cars down Claridge Drive in the Barrhaven area of Ottawa when Williams lost control of his silver Honda CRX and crashed into a light post.

Williams died, and a passenger in his vehicle suffered minor injuries. Ali and the passenger in his car were not hurt.

Williams told the court Williams had been taunting him to a street race earlier at a friend’s house. But Alli said he did not have a drivers licence, and was driving his aunt's car — so he had no interest in a race.

He told the court he was doing 50 kilometres an hour — the speed limit posted on this quiet, residential street.

That conflicts with two witnesses who appeared earlier at court. Both said they saw both cars racing at more than a hundred kilometres an hour, immediately before the crash.

Alli admitted that, after the crash, he got his friend Mohamed Kadura to lie to police — saying he was driving the car — but Alli said that's just because he didn't have a licence.

    The trial continues.
