Tim the Mulroney years are why we were lifted out of deficit and enjoy federal surpluses. Having the vision to implement the GST as a fair way to tax all businesses and not just our limited manufacturing was courageous. Getting NAFTA implemented boosted our trade surplus. Running operating surpluses reduced spending, and then putting us on track for lower interest rates combined with the trade surplus brought us out of deficit. Sad he had to do the hard work to watch Chretien benefit for it.
graceylander, I guess the Mulroney years had nothing to do with the current problems, nor does Harper. Things were much better before Harper. As for the Liberals being 'anti-Christian/pro-criminal', that's going way to far. Be critical of all politicians, but don't name-call with no hard evidence. And, in a country of only about 30 million, immigrants should generally be welcome. Xenophobia is no answer to any problem.
Canada is too busy saving the world. All these refugees are sucking this countrys health care, educational system, security, and way of life down. Close the borders, fix the problem and make this Country a "have" Country for everyone in it NOW!!!
When it comes to the problem of child poverty we can blame parents for that. Single parent families, teenage mothers, high divorce rates amongst other none governmental things, are to blame for childhood poverty. Living in a society where a welfare state insulates people from the financial consequences of their actions does not make for a productive society. We constantly read research in which it is proven that married families are richer than divorced families and yet we do not value families.
The fact that Canadian productivity is low has been true for a number of years now. For a long time our business community blamed the low Canadian dollar for the lack of investment in technology which would increase productivity. But now that the Canadian dollar is close to parity we still have a busness community which is reluctant to invest in new technology because the monetary rewards are too low to make it worthwhile. We can blame our Canadian tax system for creating this disincentive.
