Why is this man still our prime minister? He wasn't voted in and he won't get my vote as I don't feel he's done anything to help Canadians in this fuel crisis or much else for that matter.
...rwb1162 is pretty much correct. Higher Octane does NOT increase gas mileage or increase horspower in low compression cars. In fact - lower octane fuel does much better for burning in low atmospheric pressures. Lower compression needs lower octane to be more efficient. Higher octane in fact blows out the tail pipe as unburned fuel as the catalytic converters can't burn it all. Higher octane fuel can help burn out your exhaust system, too. Low compression, low octane, low poof, low emissions.
...and as soon as China buys up all the "OIL" reserves and "Capitalizes" on the "Canadian" economy much like Canada has been doing to China - gas prices will put Canadians in such a slump of depression that they will never dig out of. It's happening right now between China and Canada's big energy company. Read about it on this webpage you're on. Canadians are in for some huge suprises here fairly soon. They are going to find they are still 3rd worlders out of sync with the new world.
the oil camanies are screwing us big time, take the price differance in the grades of gas, anybody who thinks they get better fuel milage or runs better because they use super ( 90 + octane) is only fooling themselves, higher octane does nothing for your average low compression vehicle, 3 grades and 1 hose at most pumps, do you notice the oils companies never advertise it either.
It seems that we are running out of everything. We are running out of ozone, fresh water, clean air, doctors and nurses, smooth roads, and oil. Conservation is not the total answer. I am convinced that there are just too many people on this earth. The Chinese reconized the problems of over population. The planet only has so many resourses. We must slow down population growth. Its the only thing that makes sence. Stop having so many children.

You are wrong tax on fuel is twice as high in the UK and even higher in Denmark and most Nordic countries. UK gas is at least $2.10 at the moment, but they do have decent road surfaces to drive on, and their cars can do up to 70 mpg.

You are going to require a very good education and be quite young, if you really think you are going to relocate to a better country. Your contribution does not suggest you have the required education nor the application to succeed in the very few countries with a higher standard of living. You could of course fool yourself and move south, see if you can generate enough income to pay health care etc down there take a reality check buddy if you do not work you do not make it.l
It's a GLOBAL PROBLEM. Oil fields don't go on forever. Oil companies make their huge profits making ~6c/L - That's where they get their big money. They sell so much, the profit racks up big-time. There are a lot of hard working people who bring this oil to us & some have even died. Future: Vespas for everyone! Work settings closer to homes. Geothermal horizontal backyard systems! Consumption (demand) drives pricing. Inefficient systems drive prices higher still.
Tiger Lily: You're intuition is right on the mark - You genius for filtering out the trivial crap and seeing what's really going on! People: Got enough to pay for your own funeral? Our standard of living is going down. Dollar power sucks - Hearty Bread $5. Start looking up charts about this stuff. Send complaints to gov't about tax burden. Don't stand by while gov't (municipal, provincial, federal) misspends. GET answers. How much $/L do oil & gas companies get? Gov gets way more $$$$/L.
