Air Canada leaves luggage behind in Cuba, passengers still waiting

A traveller from Invermere, B.C., returned home from a trip to Cuba last week — but his luggage didn't.

Neither did the luggage belonging to almost all the other Air Canada passengers who landed in Calgary.

The flight from Varadero arrived on Friday evening. That’s when Air Canada told passengers the plane was overweight and the luggage didn't make it.

Bucky Dalke says people didn't take it well.

“Let me put it this way. I woke up in Cochrane [Alberta] on Saturday morning and all I had was a T-shirt, cut-offs and a pair of sandals,” he said.

Nearly five days later, Dalke says there's still no sign of his luggage or the luggage of his three travelling companions.

Dalke says he was given a 1-800 number, but it routed him to a call centre in India that was of little help.

“Talked to them a few times and they keep saying they don't know where it is. They don't know where it is,” he said.

Air Canada says the bags are on the way home now — and the company is apologetic.

Unpredictable winds made it necessary to reduce the load, the airline says.

“I was really upset about the way they handled the whole situation. Will I fly Air Canada again? I don't think so,” Dalke said.
