Alberta tourists met Mexico beating suspect

As a Canadian woman continues to recover in hospital following a brutal attack in Mexico, more information is coming to light about her alleged attacker.

Jose Ramon Acosta Quintero, 28, has admitted he hit Sheila Nabb, a tourist from Calgary, in a hotel elevator in the resort city of Mazatlan, but denied he wanted to kill her and said he never expected to be charged with attempted murder. He also said his confession was forced.

Two men from central Alberta told CBC News they were shocked to see Quintero’s picture plastered all over the media since the alleged beating took place at the upscale Hotel Riu nearly two weeks ago.

Chris Jones and Jordan Garrett from Red Deer said they met Quintero – or as he was called, El Ray – when they travelled to Mazatlan last December.

Jones said they were hanging out at the 24-hour bar when they met a “very drunk” Quintero. “He was just walking around and trying to pick fights with people,” Jones said.

Jones said it looked like Quintero was on a mission to pick up women, even if they had someone with them. He said when Quintero hit on one of their friends they said something to him.

“We weren’t trying to pick a fight, we were just standing up for ourselves,” Jones said.

Other guests at the resort said they had seen Quintero before, and Jones questioned the validity of the wristband that allowed Quintero access to the hotel because at night he would see him leave.

“He was also tipping the bartenders pretty heavily every time that he would go and get a drink,” Jones recalled.

Jones said they also met Quintero’s friend who said he was Canadian, but could also speak Spanish fluently.

“He was shorter, a bit bulkier … and he consistently kept warning him about El Ray and not to mess with him because we were in his country,” Jones said.

Garrett said while Quintero was being loud and obnoxious, they weren’t looking for trouble.

“We didn’t want to get kicked out of the hotel, right, and no one was going to take him seriously. Like you said, he wasn’t the biggest person around,” Garrett said.

The pair also didn’t see any security near the bar, especially the beach access.

While both Jones and Garrett agree there are still some unanswered questions, they said it looked like Quintero and his friend didn’t belong at the five-star resort.

“He had something coming, and I had said I was surprised he hadn’t been beat up by someone because he was asking for it,” said Jones.

A judge is expected to rule on Thursday whether the case against Quintero will proceed.

Airline should have record on tourists leaving Mazatlan to Canada .Put the trace there and find the guy.
Also, the lady should be able to tell if Quintero is the guy that hit her. I am sure she can tell whether the man was a Maxican or a white person.

@Lucky: The lady was knocked unconscious and therefore may have no recolection of the incedent.

head trauma often results in a loss of memory of circumstances precluding an attack.

Perhaps head trauma may result in loss of memory of circumstances, but there's also the chance her memory may be intact, or return slowly. She may remember the face prior to the attack, but nothing since, i.e. she sees this face, then suddenly everything goes black.

a few years ago the resorts use to remove your bands before you left the resort..don't know when this stopped but the last few times we wore them home..could it be people sell them at the airport to recover some costs? and some people say 'what's up with these bracelets were not in elementry school'..well I for one don't mind wearing one and by the sounds of things they don't guarantee the right guest is wearing iy anyways....just a thought..

well if anybody can get a wrist band for that hotel or resort, who's to say who belongs there and who doese't ,thats where the problems are going to arise,,,need better security obviously, We felt safe at the maya reviera Catilonia Yucatan Resort, extremly secure, like friggin fort Knox,,

@Mike: "Like friggin fort Knox"........ that sounds like an "enjoyable" vacation...... what's the point of going...........
      • Janet 3 months ago
Jim, it doesn't make for Fort Knox. You are allowed to leave, but those that aren't supposed to be there are not allowed in. That's the way it should be. There wouldn't have been a Sheila Nabb incident if the RIU was operating as it shold have been.

You should be telling this to the police, if it's true, which I seriously doubt.

This story is becoming quite a bore. There was a vicious assault...someone has been accused of that crime...BUT there is more to this story than what meets the eye.
Remember...parading an accused before the press wouldn't be done here in Canada, but this wasn't done in Canada, it was done in Mexico where they have different rules. Perhaps in Mexico you are guilty until proven innocent.
I'm both upset & angry that people blame the whole of the Mexican country for this event. Take a look at our own country..then tell me we don't have crime. We certainly do!
Would you like it if people said "Don't go to Canada..it's far too criminal". Also, the stats for the US are higher. It seems as though Mexico is the patsy whenever there's a report of wrongdoing.
There are 2 sides to every story..his side/her side then the truth.

I'd like to hear her explanation. Why was she at the bar drunk while the husband was in the room sleeping? She should be able to communicate by now and nobody has interviewed her yet?
      • alison 2 months ago
So what if she' was partying without hubs in tow. It's not cause to receive a beating, or even a lecture. People attached or otherwise can go to bars, drink, dance, laugh and enjoy life, it's not a crime and doesn't warrant an explanation to anyone.

ISTAYED AT THE PLAYA MAZITLAN AND THE ENTRANCES TO THE PLACE WERE VERY TIGHT SECURITY , IF YOU CRAPPED YOUR PANTS, THEY WOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU
      • wings 3 months ago
Yes...I'd say don't blame the resort. DREAMS also has very tight security..but if an undesired element is determined to get in, they'll get in.

Chances are that she will never come up with the details about her beating up, either because she will claim that she has lost her memory, or that she was too drunk to remember. Have any one heard that saying, looking for a bling bling, and getting a bang bang for what a lot of all the white trash do is, going down to those places to have one big party with the cheap dope that they sell over there, but I guess it came at a very high price for this one.

Chances are that this guy was the drugs supplier in that hotel, and she crossed him, pissed him off, and wang wang!!

Here is the big big question WHAT WAS SHE DOING OUT ALONE AT 02:00 AM in an unknown territory?
Here in Canada, only the drug-addicts and hoogers are running around like retarded at that hour of the night, and obviously the drug-dealers supplying it as well.

The whole story sounds a bit sketchy to me, I think there is more to it than we are being told!

Oh gee, you go to a bar, you get drunk, everyone else gets drunk, and you expect that at least one person is not going to get into a fight and get the $%^& beat out of them? Come on people..... Leave the bar before 12 and you won't get in a fight and you're wife won't sleep with someone else, and neither will you ;-D

Dadazac is right, but has touched on an issue that he has not fully understand, there is usualy a cultural difference when one goes to a country that is not alike their own, and as a guest one should act accordingly!, else trouble will eventualy find one!
    • dadazac  •  Vancouver, British Columbia  •  3 months ago
If Canadians acted more like the guests of Mexico and less like Americans, then many (not all) but many of the problems that have been happening as of late probobly wouldnt. When you are traveling anywhere use what common sence you may have and realize that you are not at home and conduct yourself as such Ive been to Puerto Vallerta 6 times in the last 10 years and have never had any trouble.
    • Flyboy  •  Kelowna, British Columbia  •  3 months ago
I have driven to Mexico with my wife and kids every year for the past 8 years. We have never had a problem or come even remotely close to any troubles anywhere in Mexico. We've been on the coast, inland, even to the DF (Distrito Federal). The Mexican people are not the problem, the stupid touristas are the problem.

As a Canadian travelling in Mexico the only people that I have encountered that are more obnoxious than Americans, are Albertans, followed closely by Quebecers. There is more to this story that just some poor innocent woman getting beat in a elevator. You wouldn't act like that at home, so why act like that in a foreign country. I mean getting pissed drunk and acting like idiots.

We see that kind of behaviour here in the interior of BC during the summer months when we get over-run by Albertans.

Get a life and learn some manners. Don't defecate in others backyards, save it for your own.
