Another drop at gas pumps; prices drop 3 cents

For the fifth week in a row, gas prices across Newfoundland and Labrador declined Thursday in the ongoing wake of a shakeup in the oil industry.

The Public Utilities Board ordered retailers to drop their prices by as much as 3.0 cents per litre. The drop may be slightly less in some geographic pricing zones, because of rounding for taxes.

The change means that a litre of self-serve unleaded gas at a station on the Avalon Peninsula, where prices are cheapest, can now sell for no more than $1.24.

Some retailers charge less to lure customers.

Gas prices have dropped as much as 14.4 cents per litre over five consecutive price settings.

Meanwhile, diesel dropped by about 0.8 cents a litre.

For people who use fuel to heat their homes, furnace oil dropped 0.9 cents a litre, while stove oil dropped 1.63 cents a litre. Propane for heating dropped 0.7 cents.
