A $55 million expansion of MacDonald Island Park in Fort McMurray is being designed by 360 Architecture, the American firm in final negotations to design the proposed arena in downtown Edmonton.
The company is working on the Fort McMurray project with Edmonton-based ATB Architecture. The expansion will add a baseball stadium, a 4,000-seat outdoor football/soccer/lacrosse stadium and an area with space for 30 to 50 non-profit organizations.
Tim Reid, the chief operating officer of the MacDonald Island Park Corporation, believes the work 360 Architecture is doing in Edmonton made the company aware of the project in Fort McMurray.
"I don't think we would have had 360 [Architecture] design in Fort McMurray, Wood Buffalo, if it wasn't for the Edmonton project," he said.
"And I think for 360, it's a great spinoff in the fact that while they're up here meeting with us, they can also go and meet with the folks in Edmonton, or vice versa."
Reid will meet with 360 Architecture representatives in Edmonton on Friday. Last week, he was in Columbus and Kansas City to see the work the company has done there.
City officials in Edmonton say they haven't yet signed a final deal with Kansas City firm but say new information about the arena will be announced by the end of the week.
