Asia’s Longest Suspension Bridge Being Built

The longest suspension bridge in Asia is under construction.
It will open to traffic next year - bridging a gap of several kilometres for motorists on both sides of a mountainous region.

The giant Longjiang Suspension Bridge, in Baoshan City of China’s south-western Yunnan Province, will span 2,470 metres (1.5 miles).
It will connect the freeways between provincial capital Kunming city and nearby Tengchong County.
It is 33.5 metres wide, made of steel, and will be the longest bridge of its kind, in all of Asia, upon completion in June 2016. It is a 1.5 billion RMB (£154m) investment by local government.

The bridge will be vital for promoting the regional economy of China’s south and south-western regions, as it will pave the way for future China-Myanmar and China-India freeways.
China already boasts the largest hydraulic dam in the world in the Three Gorges Dam, which sits over the Yangtze River.
Chinese engineers are also assembling what will be the world’s largest radio telescope, which will mark a critical step forward for the nation’s burgeoning aerospace programme.
