Babysitter charged in Toronto toddler's death

Police have made an arrest in the January death of two-year-old Jazara Garrison-Downey and are calling the incident a homicide.

On Jan. 3 at around 9 a.m., police say they were called to an address near the intersection of Wellesley Street East and Bleecker Street about child who wasn’t breathing.

Officers found the 32-month-old child with "obvious injuries" and without vital signs, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, 51 Division police said in a statement Friday.

A postmortem concluded the cause of death to be multiple recent injuries.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested the girl’s babysitter, an 18-year-old Toronto woman, Thursday and charged her with second-degree murder.

The identity of the accused is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because she was a minor when the alleged homicide took place.

She was scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
