Beagle Paws begins campaign to build shelter

Beagle Paws, a not-for-profit beagle rescue organization, has embarked on a major fundraising campaign to open its own shelter.

The group, established more than a decade ago, finds homes for abandoned and neglected beagles.

President and local chapter founder Sheila Lewis said they're currently operating out of a small office in St. John's, with limited capacity to house the animals.

"So, the majority of our dogs are kept in foster homes, or we have to pay to board them, especially when we have increased volume. We sometimes do have to put them in boarding until we can find alternate solutions for them," said Lewis.

Lewis said the plan is to build an adoption and education centre that would house 14 dogs at a time.

The group said it needs to raise $750,000 for the project.

Beagle Paws recently won $5,000 from the online Aviva Challenge Fund.
