Conservative MP wants more independence in Parliament

Conservative MP Brad Trost. (Saskatoon StarPhoenix file photo)A Conservative member of parliament wants more independence.

According to a story in the Star Phoenix, Saskatchewn's Brad Trost is questioning the "ironclad" party discipline that prevails in Ottawa, saying it stifles debate and prevents independent thinking.

"We need to have a cultural change. I think it would relax everybody," Trost said.

"The (party) whip needs to have less authority over members."

Trost adds that he admires politicians of all stripes who have voted according to their conscience or the will of residents in their ridings, rather than blindly following the national party line.

History, however, hasn't been very kind to these dissenting MPs.

In 1986, Progressive Conservative MP David Kilgour was booted out of caucus for voting against the GST.

In 2007,  Nova Scotia MP Bill Casey's decision to vote against his party's budget legislation got him excused from the Tory caucus.

More recently, two Thunder Bay-area New Democratic Party MPs were disciplined by interim NDP leader Nycole Turmel for voting in favour of the abolition of the long-gun registry.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! Canada News, Green Party leader Elizabeth May said the level of party discipline was one of the things that surprised her most during her first session in parliament.

"The role of organized political parties in telling MPs what their duties are once they're elected has actually led to members of Parliament not even investigating for themselves the extent to which they have power," she said.

"I think very few members of Parliament actually read legislation. They are told by the party whip how they're going to vote. (It's that way) with all the parties, that's how things are run."

As for Trost, he says he's "kicking around" the idea of introducing a private members bill on the issue, noting that other western democracies such as Britain and the United States are mature enough to have more vigorous debates within parties.

"If everyone in a party thinks the same on every issue, not a lot of thinking is going on."

Finally, a politician that really understands why he was elected, to represent the people that voted for him. Our Canadian system has been so corrupted by the big business leaders and their little puppets like Harper and the tired old tories in Alberta that it has totally lost any meaning as to the representation of the voters. It's no bloody wonder that the turnouts on election day are so dismal we all know that no matter how we, the general public votes, we will never get the MP representation that was intended with the inception of parliamentary democracy. We now live in a parliamentary dictatorship with every majority government we elect. When we gave Harper his desire to have a majority we unleashed a monster and when I say we I don't mean me!

        Well said.

Sadly it's all about gaining power and implementing the party's left or right ideology and damn the general population.

Dictatorship? Monster? Oh, and look, the sky IS falling. I do agree that MP's should vote based on what their constituents want rather than party ideology. But all this Harper = evil dictator crap on here bothers me. FINALLY we are getting some action on things that are needed ( voluntary CWB, abolish long gun reg., cutting spending, etc ) after years of USELESS minority govs where none of the above could be accomplished. The reason nothing could be accomplished is the same reason this article is written, MP have to vote against another party's ideas just because their mission in life is to destroy the opposition rather than make a better Canada.

We need to support this MP by calling or emailing all the Conservative MP's and telling them this is what we demand from them for our vote. If we don't support him, then he will be gone and we will continue to get what we have been getting, ignored and abused.

Mr Trost better be careful or he might end up in Guantanamo or labeled a communist. Gawd forbid MP's be allowed to be the voice of their constituents.

.... and have democracy in government!!!!

all the power in a political party is in the hands of the people behind the scenes that never get elected or even run; the ones that pull the puppet strings

the best way to see this change is to adopt a different form of govenrment independeant of the party politics system

there is a system that actually works called Consensus government which is operating in the Northwest territory and i think Nunuvat as well

no political parties so come time to vote on a bill the elected member has 3 considerations what would be best for his constituents
      what his constituents prefer
and his own moral reaction to the bill

in a party politics situation of course trumping all 3 of those is what the Party says to do
and as such we get legislation to satisfy the Political party not what may be best for the Country or Province

Of course the elected Political Parties always know what is best for the Province or Nation
in spite of anything those idiots who vote might think to the contrary

consensus government does not fall if a bill is defeated that just means it was not good enough to please the Majority of MLAs
thereis no squabling over who will have a say in a bill it does not matter where the idea comes from since it is not related to a party; if an idea has merit it can be adopted into a bill
if it lacks merit it won't be used
when a bill is put forward everybody has a say in what may be good or bad about it and thus legislation can be improved using the best ideas of all available resulting in better legislation

of course Political Parties are never going to relinquish the power they have over a silly idea like improving government

A useful confirmation of the fact that Harper has more of the characteristics of a dictator than a democratic leader. We are living under a quasi dictatorship. Better get out of the malls, miss a few hockey games and start thinking about what is happening to your country.

As for Trost - good for him but there have been at least two books about Harper one by Garth Turner that made the same claim about Harper and his control issues. Too bad people didn't think before the last election. Maybe we would not have elected the Harper dictatorship.

Lawrence Martin;s "Harperland-the politics of control--shows how much of a control freak Harper is. My favorite part of the book was when a fellow colleuge @ the National Citizens Coilition said he like Harper's advertisement but he thought it could be changed a little. Harper then told him "I dont give a f@#$ what you think".

Wake up. All parties operate the same way. If you think your favorite doesn't, you're sadly mistaken.
      • Nadreck 3 months ago
So that's the best that Reform-a-Tory Apologists can do? "We only suck as much as everyone else!"? The Tories are orders of magnitude worse on the control freak issue these days than any other party has been since Mackenzie King. Even Trudeau's arrogance pales before that of Dear Leader Harper.

Now there is a surprise. Imagine being able to vote on a policy/platform using your mind; representing the area/members that you are supposed to be representing; and doing it after careful reading of a document/knowledge of the issue and voting your conscience. Just imagine! But reality - here is how our party is voting and so are you or else... Something has and always will be wrong with this mentality.

I'll be very interested and watching very carefully how Mr. Trost will vote in the new parliament. Let's see whether he puts his money where his mouth is!

Themcool88, think about it! What he's saying is that there's no independant thinking going on. Harper is telling them what they are allowed to think, so they are cannot express their own thoughts on any subject. Not really an idiot.

debates? do they even do that sort of thing anymore?.. isn't it just "term dictatorship" no matter which party spends our money?
    • 1984  •  3 months ago
      Yes, Freedom of Speech.
      • J 3 months ago
Freedom of Speech only works if what you speak is in line with the majority. Freedom of Thought is something no one can take away from you. My example are the negative responses on this forum when someone dares to speak differently.

        No such thing exists !

It's just a saying like " hey, how's it going" but you really don't care for the answers because it is so robotic.
    • A Yahoo User  •  Calgary, Alberta  •  3 months ago
Well Harper will either "get him in line" or kick him out of his caucus before he knows it.
    • Lorax  •  Regina, Saskatchewan  •  3 months ago
""ironclad", stifles debate and prevents independent thinking." That sums up the Harper regime right there.

I'm glad Brad Trost and Elizabeth May are pointing this out. I hope the Tories don't punish him for speaking out on it. Every election I have to vote for the party not the candidate, because MPs are basically robots for their party in Canada's political system.
    • donny brook  •  Burnaby, British Columbia  •  3 months ago
sounds like he is looking for democracy, but he won't find it anywhere near Harper.
    • MarriedMan  •  Saskatoon, Saskatchewan  •  3 months ago
I agree with Brad Trost, but Harper will cut him off at the knees for his comments.
    • TellinThaTruth  •  3 months ago
Good for them. We need more Conservatives like Trost. We need debate.
    • Eric B  •  3 months ago
Finally a politician with a brain, too bad Harper will get rid of him for his comments. I hope the people from hid riding raise such a stink that Harper can't fire him. Mr Trost, convince your fellow MP's to join you and get rid of Harper.

Finally somebody with balls enough to speak up..The Conservative Leader Hitl, oops Harper is actually trying to out do Hitler as a grandious leader..Harper thinks he is Little Hitler. He should be in control of his party, yes..But, he should not be able to rule as a communist dictator would..Each member of parliament was elected by the people of his/her riding and should convey their wishes to any debate..Harper is running himself in to a quick defeat, maybe before the next election
    • Dave  •  3 months ago
I have to admire Trost for speaking out against Harpers insane control over his party. Going public with his criticisms may be a terrible career move for Trost, but it's nice to see that not all in the Conservative party are sheep.

      LOL!! Brad Trost
Harper is on his way out over the pensions!!!
