New Democrats go positive with new campaign-style ad

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair met with the family of Rehtaeh Parsons in Halifax Saturday.

Another week, another political ad.

This time, it's the New Democrats' turn.

Interestingly, they didn't choose to rail against the Conservatives for the Senate scandals or losing track of $3.1 billion or for muzzling of scientists or backbenchers.

Like the Liberals, they decided to go positive.

The ad — currently on YouTube — is a condensed version of a video shown at the NDP convention in April.

Clearly, the NDP are trying to soften Mulcair's persona: They're trying to show him as a an experienced politician and as a family man. They're trying to nix the Tory narrative which dubs him as 'Angry Tom.'

"People got to know Jack (Layton) over 10 years. We don’t have as much time to introduce Tom to Canada before the next election — and the stakes are too high this time for us," Nathan Rotman, the party's national director, told the Huffington Post last month.

"We have two years, so we will be highlighting his depth, highlighting his experience, highlighting some of the things that make him tick."

In an email exchange with Yahoo! Canada News, NDP Press Secretary Lyne Robichaud said that English and French language versions of this ad will be aired on television within the next few days.
