Laureen Harper to co-host YouTube cat video festival

The Harper family's love affair with cats continues.

Laureen Harper — the wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper — has been chosen to co-present the first ever TIFF Bell Lightbox/Canadian Federation of Humane Societies cat-themed YouTube video festival.

That's right: a festival dedicated to YouTube videos all about cats.

Here's the announcement on the TIFF website.

The first-ever festival devoted to the best in cat-themed YouTube videos makes its Toronto debut at TIFF Bell Lightbox — with a red carpet and bona fide felines in attendance!

Host Magali Simard, Film Programmes Manager at TIFF Bell Lightbox, will be joined by Laureen Harper, a volunteer and cat foster-mom for Humane Societies across Canada.

The event takes place on April 17th.

"We knew Laureen Harper is a cat activist so we contacted her and she graciously accepted to come to the event," Danyel McLachlan, communications coordinator for the Toronto International Film Festival, told Yahoo Canada News.

"It's exciting to be showcasing these phenomenal (and addictive) cat videos on the big screen. We are doing it in the spirit of fun, community and awareness."

The Harper's, of course, have been very public about their love of cats.

According to the Prime Minister's website, the family has housed many orphaned felines over the years.

"At any given time, the Harpers have provided foster care to numerous cats at their Ottawa home," notes one page dedicated to the cause.

In 2011, the Harper even took to social media, asking for help to name his new cuddly friend. Canadians chose Stanley.

And then there was this letter, from March 2013, posted on Reddit by someone who claimed it was from Prime Minister Harper to his friend 'Justin.'

Our two cats are named Stanley and Gypsy. Stanley is the grey tabby and is two years old. Gypsy is the wise old cat of the house and is almost nine. Her favourite sport is hunting down mice around 24 Sussex. Stanley is less discerning. He will chase anything as long as it means he gets to play.

I have taken the liberty of enclosing a photo of Stanley for you. He likes the camera. Gypsy, on the other hand, has no patience for it.

While a picture of the letter looks authentic, the National Post reported that the prime minister's office didn't confirm its authenticity.
