Which McGuinty brother for federal Liberal leader?

The Liberal Party convention in Ottawa has suddenly become the McGuinty show.

In a media scrum on Saturday afternoon, MP David McGuinty, brother of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, said he's considering a run for the federal leadership of the party but needs a few months to think about it.

"I'm not ruling out the leadership. I'm giving this serious consideration. I have an obligation to do this," he said.

"If I'm going to stay in public life, I've got to figure out what's the best way to serve. And that's what I'm considering."

Meanwhile, brother Dalton keeps denying any interest in the job, but seems to be the choice of a lot of the delegates. On Friday, the Ontario premier addressed the crowd at the national Liberal Party convention in Ottawa with a barn burner of a speech leaving many delegates yearning for a Dalton McGuinty-led ticket in the next federal election. Speaking to a huge crowd of Liberal Party faithful, he offered advice based on the "front line experience fighting neo-Conservatives" in his province.

"When I was elected leader in 1996, my party had won just one election in the previous 53 years," he said.

"In my first election, the voters knew what we stood against. We stood against the other guys and their record. But voters didn't know what we stood for. So the other guys defined us. As you can imagine they did it in an unhelpful way."

On Saturday, many of delegates were still talking about his speech.

Convention delegate Kelly from Ontario told Yahoo! Canada News that Dalton McGuinty gives the federal Liberals the best chance to win in the next election.

"You saw him energize the crowd, you saw how the crowd reacted [Friday] night. If he's our [federal] leader in 2015, we'll win," she said.

"We've got to encourage him to run."

Delegate Jim from Manitoba said the Ontario premier would be his choice for federal party leader.

"I think he shows he has what it takes to be a leader and I hope he'll consider throwing his hat in the ring," he said.

And delegate Bill from Ontario said McGuinty's speech was the highlight of the conference.

"If he decides to throw his hat into the ring, he would probably be one of the best candidates that the Liberal Party would have to steward our party through the next election," he told Yahoo! Canada News.

"Would I support him? Absolutely. It's just a question of whether he wants it."
