NDP admits to ‘dirty trick’ in turncoat MP’s riding

Member of Parliament for Saint Maurice Champlain Lise St-Denis is embraced by interim Liberal leader Bob Rae after …It appears the NDP have taken a page from the Tory handbook.

About a month ago, the Conservative party was caught making misleading telephone calls to constituents in  Liberal MP Irwin Cotler's riding.

Despite railing against the Conservatives for that incident, it's been revealed that the NDP have been up to their own dirty tricks.

According to a story at iPolitics.ca, the NDP was behind an odd robocall campaign that "deluged Quebec MP Lise St-Denis' offices last week with phone calls from constituents upset with her jump from the NDP to the Liberals."

The robocall asked constituents to press "1" if they disagreed with St-Denis' decision to cross the floor.  Those that pressed "1" were automatically transferred to one of St-Denis' offices.

NDP Spokeswoman Sally Housser said that 1,000 constituents were transferred with that robocall.

"We have no intention of abandoning the people in the riding who voted for the NDP and we plan to keep them informed and not abandon them," Housser told iPolitics.

"Even though Ms. St-Denis and the Liberal Party really have no respect for their democratic rights."

Housser's revelation came only a day after the NDP's Quebec caucus chair Guy Caron categorically denied that the NDP had anything to do with phone campaign in St-Denis' riding.

"This is not our way of doing things so I would be extremely surprised if it came from us," Caron told iPolitics.

For her part, St-Denis says she doesn't believe there is a wave of popular anger over her decision to leave the NDP, saying the outcry only reflects an organized campaign by her former colleagues.

"I understand that the NDP is angry and encouraged people to act in that way,"  she said in a radio interview according to the Globe and Mail.

"I don't think that the level of disapproval is as high as it would seem to be."

It's not just the dirty tricks of the Consevatives or the sneaky stunts of the NDP or whatever the Liberals do. It's the lack of ethics and morals of all politicians.

Sadly, you're right ! Politics, more appropriately, election / REelection tactics by ALL of them is tearing Canada apart. Desperate politicians will do ANYTHING to get into power and that is an extremely, dangerous thing.

99% of all politicians are liars and cheats, too many slimey individuals as well in their parties as well.

I really don't understand why they are kicking up such a stink. I've lost count of how many have changed parties in the past ten years. Heck the cons merged with the reform party and changed their whole dynamic! whatever gets them elected is all that they care about these days.

This type of behaviour is common. It never ceases to amaze me how juvenile some of our MP's act, especially during question period, they really hurl the personal insults around. However, there is no honour in crossing the floor, it is a reminder of how slipperry the party distinctions are-they all meld into one camp of law school graduates.

This just demonstrates the level of maturity in people who will be getting huge pensions in a few years. Shame on them, be they NDPissers, Conswervatives, or Fiberals! And pollsters speculate why voter turnout is low! Perhaps we realize all too well what little we have to vote for!

      How can this be legal?
Everyone who voted for this person or party has had their votes changed after the fact.
How is this any different that litterally, physically tampering with voters ballots?

Well, here's the funny thing about our government. It's supposed to be representational, so when we go to the polls, we are supposed to be voting for the person running IN OUR RIDING who best REPRESENTS US. We are NOT supposed to be voting for a party, or a party leader. We are supposed to do research on the candidates and find out which one best represents us. If people actually did that, then they would have been voting for St-Denis, and her integrity/values, not her party, and they should be proud of her for standing up for her integrity/values.

So we're supposed to just say, "Oh those naughty politicians! God love 'em!"
Meanwhile, Canadian citizens who made the trip to the polls have had their votes effectively rendered void. Worse, they've been hijacked.

You're right. But if we're going to look the other way let it be while voting during the next election. Keep your eyes far away from those Liberals. If you want to vote NDP vote for the MP you want, rather than the PM you want.

Politicians should not be allowed to cross the floor they should be forced to resigne their seat then hold another election in the riding

Trust me we know all about that in our district When Harper bribed the Liberal member to cross the floor to join him by giving him a cabinet post. How soon the cons forget that they have done the same and were proud of their endeavor. When the shoe is on the other foot the the story changes.

It has been proven again and again that leaving one party and joining an other for personal gain never works in the long run - something always goes wrong; Brenda Stranach is a case in point. One can only hope it happens in this case.

You say run another election...Spend all that money? that person should wait till another election submit her name again to the other party and than that person will see the results: no one is going to vote for a turncoat!

Meh, more disgusting politickin'. I wonder if there is any chance that we could go back to the days when leaders were noble and could actually effect change?

Politics, plain and simple, is not a moral trade. We somehow have to get people who will do us right.

Back Door Dealing,In Camera Meetings,Misrepresentation, Libel and Slander. This describes the Canadian Politician in 2012. I don't care what party you are from.It would seem Canada's political state is more like the USA than ever.I find this Deplorable....Democratic process is being subverted by the same people whom have sworn to protect it.

believe me lady its as high as it can get.You are a traitor denying people in your riding their democratic rights to be represented by their choice at the polls.
i urge harper to draft legislation to stop this in the future.

Everyone's missing the point. This is our government and it's supposed to be democratic - chosen by the people. Regardless of which party she's from, when an elected member defects to another party she is in effect completely negating the decision of those who voted her into power. She doesn't have the right to "cross the floor"! The very power which gives the member the option to do so was entrusted to her by constituents who expected her to serve under the flag of the party she ran and they voted for. Now, those who voted for her and the NDP have effectively had they're vote switched to Liberal. They might as well have tampered with the ballots.
I would be livid if I had voted in that riding. I'm enraged as it is. Why do we accept this? Is everyone so cynical that we have no appreciation and respect for democracy anymore?

First, the Conservative ploy in Irwin Cotler's riding took place in the fall of 2011, not "about a month ago". If you can't get basic information like that correct, Mr. Radia, how can you expect us to trust what you write?
Second, it doesn't seem that this NDP action interferred with voters. It gave the opportunity to people, once they indicated that thay were unhappy with St-Denis' decision to switch parties, to speak directly to St-Denis or one of her staffers. If these people had been uncomfortable with the phone transfer they could have hung up the phone; no harm done. the intention of the action taken in Cotler's riding was to create confusion regarding Cotler's future as MP; basically a lie to his constituents.

I'll tell you that is my MP crossed the floor I would be doing more that just one phone call. If she does not think the disapproval rate is as high as it seems then she is out of touch..
