Toronto Star obtains ‘secret document’ detailing the Harper Conservatives’ election strategy

Put all the Stephen Harper is retiring rumours to bed.

An anonymous source has sent the Toronto Star a "secret document" laying out the Conservative Party reelection strategy for 2015.

The 70-page slide show presentation to the Conservative party’s national council last weekend by executive director Dimitri Soudas appears to acknowledge that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has work to do to reach out to Canadians and win their trust for another government.

The PowerPoint presentation is a quarter-by-quarter blueprint of timelines and actions to be taken through 2014.

It defines what success looks like: “Ensure we don’t wake up on October 20, 2015 with Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister.”

The presentation, according to the Star, includes a lot of detail.

The Tories plan to utilize Mrs. Harper, launching a YouTube series to help put a human face on the government; they will be more aggressive with fundraising and social media while putting together their 'war room' this Spring; and their main narrative will be: "strong, stable leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper or poor judgment of Justin Trudeau."

And if you're someone who is active on social media, be warned: The Conservatives are watching you. One section of the presentation talks about how the Tories can mine supporters by trolling through Facebook likes.

If the NDP and Liberals can get their hands on the original documents, they've got a great deal of intelligence to use against the Tories.

For the rest of the general public, however, the information isn't probably too shocking.

Certainly, we would have expected the party to be more active on social media and to be more aggressive in terms of their fundraising efforts. Moreover, using a prime minister's wife to soften his image is nothing new.

But there are a couple other themes of note here.

The first one is, contrary to the many prognostications, there won't be an early election and Stephen Harper isn't retiring.

The second is that the Tories are completely focused on Justin Trudeau and aren't even mentioning the NDP and Thomas Mulcair.

And finally — what should be of most concern to Soudas — there seems to a rat within the Conservative Party ranks.
