Torontonians praise Nenshi, slam Ford during rain storm
In Calgary, some have dubbed Naheed Nenshi 'Superman' for his stewardship over that city's flood recovery efforts.
There are t-shirts and posters of the mayor all across the city and wherever he goes these days, he's swarmed by 'fans' asking for a picture.
Well, Nenshi-mania made it's way to Twitter on Monday evening in the midst of Toronto's wild rain storm.
As explained by the Huffington Post, Torontonians were "summoning" Nenshi in their hour of need. The tweets only intensified after the Toronto Sun's Don Peat reported that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford had lost power to his house and was in his car with his kids trying to stay cool.
#Calgary can we borrow @nenshi for a few days? Immediately please? #Toronto needs a real mayor at this time. #topoli #cdnpoli

Can we get #Rent_A_Nenshi trending? RT @torontodan Calgary, can we borrow your mayor for a few days? Kind of an emergency…#cdnpoli” @nenshi — Amanda C (@art_by_amandac) July 8, 2013
Should we all simultaneously tweet @nenshi and beg him to replace Mayor Ford? Or at least send a sibling or a cousin? #stormTO

And, on Tuesday morning the tweets continued with more and more jabs at Ford.
When the #floods came to Calgary, Mayor Nenshi put on a superman cape. When the floods came to #TO, Mayor Ford put on Dazed n Confused. — Jeff Jeffries (@jeffriesradio) July 9, 2013
Calgary floods: Mayor @Nenshi stays up for two days straight helping with the effort. Toronto floods: Mayor @Ford hides in his Escalade.

where is @TOMayorFord today? any apologies for abandoning the city during the #toflood? is he still #invisible? can we have #nenshi? #topoli

The comparisons between Ford and Nenshi are nothing new. As two of Canada's highest profile mayors, the public and the media alike have enjoyed highlighting their very different personalities and their approach to politics.

But in this instance, maybe @jgeady is Twitter's voice of reason:
(maybe don't compare yesterday to the Calgary flooding, nor Nenshi's to Ford's response - Calgary was way way worse, a state of emergency) — Jeff (@jgeady) July 9, 2013
After all, donning a cape in a non-emergency would look a little silly, wouldn't it?
