“I peed today”: University of Windsor seeks Guinness World Record for STI tests

CUPE claims University of Windsor to contract out janitorial jobs

One university is taking their chance at breaking a world record by asking hundreds of people to pee in cups.

Next Monday, health officials and students at the University of Windsor are attempting to perform the most sexually-transmitted infections (STI) tests in one day.

The health unit’s sexual health clinic along with several student-run groups is inviting the community to get tested for two common STIs, chlamydia and gonorrhea.

The standing record for the most STIs tests in a single day was set at 767 in Basingstoke, England back in 2013, The Windsor Star reports.

While the goal is to get a Guinness World Record, organizers say the event aims to reduce the stigma of getting tested and raise awareness about the importance of getting checked.

“This lighter approach to screen for a couple of STIs, incorporating the important messages of awareness, education and prevention, is a positive step towards de-stigmatizing and encouraging testing,” Maria Blass, director of Student Health Services at the University of Windsor, said in a news release.

The event will include a DJ at the venue and is being called ‘T’s for Pees.’ Everyone that samples their urine will be given a t-shirt with the words “I Peed Today!” written across the front.

“There’ll be music there, it’ll be a real party-like atmosphere,” Nicole Fisher, the health unit’s infectious disease prevention manager at the university, told The Windsor Star. “And it’s simple. You come in, you pee and get a T-shirt.”

Over the past five years, rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea in the Windsor-Essex County have been significantly lower than provincial rates, the news release reports.

The school says they are expecting more than 517 participants but they’re not the only Canadian schools who have attempted to break this record.

Currently, Western University holds the Canadian record for most STIs tests done in 24 hours with a total of 516.
