Could Alex Trebek become the mayor of Toronto?

Toronto may have a new mayor in the coming years. Names being tossed around include Olivia Chow, John Tory and Adam Vaughan. Even Jose Canseco said at one point he may run. Now a Canadian celebrity may be tossing his hat in the ring to keep the city from being in jeopardy.

The 72-year-old TV star told The Canadian Press that he has no plans to retire from hosting Jeopardy!, a gig he's had since 1984, but joked he doesn't know what the future holds. He eluded a run for political office may even be in the future.

"I have been considering going into politics, but where and in what venue and what level ..." he told CP. "In a couple of years it might be fun to come back to Toronto after having left Jeopardy! for an office here if there's one available ... wink, wink."

But it probably won't happen soon. He is under contract until 2016, and said he can continue hosting the show as long as he wants.

Trebek is in Toronto to promote his show at the fall preview for TV channel CHCH. He said he still lives the same "dumb lifestyle," which includes starting his day with a Snickers and Diet Pepsi, he skips lunch and doesn't exercise.

Despite this and recent health scares, including being hospitalized for a mild heart attack in 2012, he says he's in good health and enjoying what he's doing.

He does admit to feeling his age while working 11-hour days. The days are so long because they shoot five episodes at once.

"It's more challenging for me than it was years ago because I have to work harder," he told CP. "As you get older, maintaining a high level of concentration becomes very difficult, so you have to really focus and it's harder to focus."

Trebek was born in Sudbury, went on to graduate from Toronto's Malvern Collegiate in 1958 and earned a philosophy degree from the University of Ottawa in 1961. He began working for CBC and in 1963 started hosting his first show called Music Hop. For 11 years after moving to the U.S. he bounced around between networks and game shows before landing Jeopardy! in 1984.
