Giant sinkhole surprises man who thinks it’s a puddle

Maybe dip your toe before assuming it's a puddle you're jumping into.

Dressed in white shoes and a sweater, the man in this video prepares to jump into a puddle, joking that he's doing it for the kids.

However, he soon finds himself over his head. In water. Because the puddle is actually a sinkhole that's deeper than he is tall, apparently located in the parking lot of a Family Dollar discount store.

The video's description says his friend offered him one dollar to jump into the 'puddle', without realizing the hole might be deep enough for the man to drown. When he jumps, his friends exclaim in surprise and then burst out laughing as he crawls back out, dripping wet.

Sinkholes have been in the news lately, most notably in the case of a Florida man who was swallowed by one while he slept in his bedroom.

Last year, a sinkhole large enough to fit a car opened up on a Saskatoon road. Similarly, a water main break in Markham, Ontario, in 2011 created a 30-metre-wide hole into which the road crumbled, according to the Toronto Star, not to mention another Toronto road chasm a few months prior.

Winnipeg developed a disappearing highway last summer when 200 metres of road crumbled into a crater.

Nonetheless, it's rare that a puddle jumping excursion becomes a swim.
