Hospital inundated with pizzas after young patient’s clever plea for pie

The family of a toddler with cancer says an online community brightened their little girl's spirits in the tastiest way possible this weekend by sending more than 20 pizzas to her hospital room.

Hazel Hammersley, a two-year-old with neuroblastoma, was at the Los Angeles Children's Hospital for chemo treatment when her mother wrote a silly message on the window.

"Send pizza Rm 4112," the message said. A user on the website Reddit posted a photo taken from the outside of the hospital, and it blossomed into a frenzy of pizza orders. Hazel's mother, Lauren, wrote on her blog the hospital was inundated with pizza. More than 20 boxes piled up before the hospital pleaded for supporters to stop sending pizza.

Lauren said her daughter was delighted.

"Hazel woke up from her nap to the smell of pizza and was so excited to chow down!" she wrote.

Hazel's room turned into a pizza party for other children and nurses in the hospital. Lauren wrote that she and her family pass long hours in the hospital using fun ideas such as the pizza message. She posted a thank you note on Sunday.

Online supporters shared words of encouragement and wishes for a "pizza-fueled" recovery.
