Kate Middleton’s hospital pranked by Australian radio station

A radio station in Australia has pulled off a royal prank of epic proportions while hardly even trying.

DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian from Sydney's 2Day FM pretended to be the Queen and Prince Charles when they called the hospital where Kate Middleton is staying for treatment of severe morning sickness.

"Oh, hello there, could I please speak to Kate, please, my granddaughter?" Greig says on the recorded call, in an unconvincing British accent.

King Edward VII's Hospital transfers the call to the Duchess' ward, no questions asked.

While the line is on hold, Christian whispers, "If this has worked, it's the easiest prank call we've ever made."

Sure enough, a nurse answers a few seconds later.

"She's sleeping at the moment and she's had an uneventful night," the nurse says, sounding bewildered by her audience with the 'Queen.'

She divulges a few more details about Kate's condition, saying she hasn't been 'retching' and Will left at about 9 o'clock. The pranksters comment that a hospital bed is nothing like the palace and another radio station staff member barks in the background, pretending to be one of the Queen's pet corgis.

The entire performance is nearly as absurd as the fact that it worked. The call ends politely before the hosts burst out laughing.

The hospital was not impressed, of course, and a spokesman said the hospital deeply regretted the call.

The hospital's chief executive said the hospital is reviewing its telephone protocols.

"This was a foolish prank call that we all deplore," he added.

Canadian DJ Pierre Brassard pulled off a former royal prank in 1995 when he called the Queen, pretending to be then-Prime Minister Jean Chretien. He spoke to the Queen for 15 minutes without her realizing the call was a hoax. He even convinced her to try and influence the Quebec separation referendum.
