Must-see videos of the week – Dec. 14

From a crook making off with a couple's driveway to a monkey in a fancy coat running around a Toronto Ikea, we've seen some fascinating videos this week. Here are some of our favourites:

1. Crooks steal couples' driveway

A Florida woman — who doesn't want to be identified — came home one evening this week and noticed a big bump in her driveway. That's because her driveway was stolen. A neighbour saw the whole thing happen, but assumed they hired someone to remove it. The 300 square feet of brick is worth about $300 and authorities are looking for suspects. This isn't the strangest large item to be stolen — in May, thieves made off with a 10-ton bridge in the Czech Republic in broad daylight, and a English homeowner awoke in March to discover his entire front lawn had been stolen.

2. Handcuffed suspect steals police car

If you're ever in the back of a police car and want to get away, take some advice from this guy. Officers in Texas handcuffed a suspect and placed him in the back of a squad car and then left the scene to talk to a business owner in the area. Most people may think the suspect was secure, but the suspect has other plans. He somehow managed to get the handcuffs in front of him, roll down a window, open the back door, get out of the car and then open the front door and drive away. And the whole thing was captured by a dashboard camera. One officer said it was the first time it has ever happened to their department, but they don't plan to change their procedures.

3. Reporter surprises mortified kid on 12th birthday

Wednesday was Dec. 12, 2012, or 12-12-12. Many people rushed out to get married and some thought the world was going to end. A local TV station in Arizona took a different angle, finding a boy who was born at 12:11 a.m. 12 years ago. They showed up at his class with a balloon. The kid, Caleb Castillo, looks more mortified than surprised, answers the reporter's questions in the shortest possibly way and looks incredibly embarrassed while all of his classmates sing happy birthday. Good thing for this kid, who obviously doesn't like the camera, this will be the only time he turns 12.

4. Well-dressed monkey runs around Toronto Ikea

The buzziest news of the week may very well be the monkey that escaped from a car in an Ikea parking lot. After some people shot some pictures of the animal in a shearling coat and a diaper, it went viral and was covered by outlets around the world. The monkey, named Darwin, was taken to an animal sanctuary after an apparently stressful day. The owner was fined for having an exotic pet in Toronto, but she said she will fight to get him back. She said Darwin should be able to choose where he lives.

5. Shake, rattle and roll

If you are one of those people who nervously shakes when dropping off gifts to be shipped because you don't know if it'll arrive intact, this video may ease your fears. The people at UPS are taking extra steps to make sure your gift gets to the person in one piece. They have developed a special lab where machines simulate every mode of transportation to test the durability of their boxes. All the items are remarkably unscathed, but then again, the people in the lab seem to be a lot more careful than the throwers at airports.
