‘Snackman’ stops New York subway fight while eating chips

Charles Sonder has a Facebook page and theme song because of how he broke up a fight

Charles Sonder is an ordinary 24-year-old New York architect above ground during the day but on the subway at night he was able to diffuse a fight and is now considered by some to be a superhero. For this brave act, he has gained the nickname of 'Snackman.'

He was on the uptown No. 6 train in New York City when a fight broke out. Sonder calmly stepped in between the two aggressive people preventing them from throwing any more punches and didn't even skip a beat with eating his chips.

"I thought if I got in between them they would just stop hitting each other, maybe diffuse the situation a little bit," he said in a CBS video. "I didn't stop eating chips while I was doing it so we had a little laugh afterward."

Sonder told DNAInfo he couldn't think of anything else to do so he just stood there. "I didn't want them to accidentally hit anyone on the train."

A stranger recorded the video and posted it to YouTube where it now has almost a million views. People have created a Facebook page that has the top image of Sonder eating a chip in the middle of a Last Supper painting and he has a theme song that sounds remarkably similar to the Batman song.

Sonder didn't just break up the fight, he did it in the most brave and nonchalant way. He didn't hold either of them back, he just stood there.

"He changed the context...changed the dynamic and deescalated the incident," said security expert Steve Kardian to CNN, who seemed impressed with his tactic.

As seen in the video, shortly after the fight ended a woman wearing what appears to be a cape stands next to Snackman. It's unclear if she also had a role in diffusing the fight. Either way, Snackman is the one getting all the fame.

He told CBS New York the best part of his new-found fame is having his family say they are proud of him.
