Snow piled 10 metres high along Japanese road

We've dodged much of winter's wrath in Canada with higher than normal temperatures and smaller amounts of snow this year. The same can't be said for other parts of the world.

A cold snap returned to Japan this week bringing blizzards and creating record snow piles in some areas. The city of Niigata in central Japan has already seen 13 feet of snow and the weather agency is predicting up to 25 additional inches over the next few days, reports WFMY News. The village of Okura has received more than 10 feet of the white stuff and the Hokuriku area received three feet in less than 24 hours.

It is no wonder this road in Japan has massive snow walls on both sides. The video below shows footage from a bus travelling up the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Snow is as high as 10 metres above the road in some spots.

In much of Europe, the situation is not different. The freezing temperatures have been responsible for taking hundreds of lives and transportation has all but stopped in many countries.

Thick ice covers the Danube River, halting ships and freezing many in place.

In Italy, soldiers worked to free villages trapped in more than 10 feet of snow and distributed 4,000 spades to residents. Even the Coliseum in Rome was blanketed by the white stuff.

The record low temperatures are making life difficult for people still living in tents after an earthquake rattled Turkey in October. The country moved 134,000 into temporary homes, but there were still about 7,500 living in tents as temperatures dipped well below zero.

The unusually cold and snowy weather is also providing some amazing images, including the one showing a car and tree trunks completely covered by ice in Switzerland.

"the white stuff" doesn't make it sound better.
let's just call it the white stuff
      • Kilkenny H 3 months ago

I grew up in the early 50's with this type of snow height! It's nothing new to me...but now Canada is getting less and less snow...it was tough but we managed...in a family of 8 there were plenty of kids to shovel everyone out! NO SCHOOL FOR 3 DAYS! :)

you are so right! This is not global warming...this is the cycle of how the weather goes...I remember snowfalls like this when I was young! I remember one winter storm we had buried the cars on the road..you couldn't even see them! Yes, I remember having NO SCHOOL too! Boy, can you remember how exciting that was, because the schools rarely was cancelled, not like today...and we didn't have school buses at that time! I remember when we had rain, then a cold snap right after...I was able to skate to school!

Me too! My favourite two words when I was growing up was "Snow Day!" But I'm not ready to think we're done for this winter. Nature has a way of giving you exactly what you don't want.

Not sure why this is news. This road is famous for its snow walls that are only open at the end of winter. It is an popular tourist attraction every winter. It is not newsworthy. The mountains in Japan always get much more snow than most parts of Canada, but we are still known in Japan as the land of snow.

Aren't you a wet towel? If it's interesting and does not involve anyone named Kardashian, it's news.

Why isn't this news? Because it's something YOU already know and are not interested in. Get over yourself.

And....you think the rest of us are so aware of Japan's mountain roads that we would all know this? JP's right, get over yourself Mr. Know It All.

Me too, since it's man made I wouldn't really try to go near it and if it even starts to melt or something, I dunno the thought of would be scary to be buried in a car in it :O !

The gulf stream is reaching higher across parts of Canada and where the Arctic cold should be dipping down upon us, we seemed to have reversed this role with the other half of the world....they're getting a taste of our weather but it seems they are getting it two fold...I've never seen anything like that WALL OF SNOW before.....'cept round the time Mel Lastman called in the national guard!!!! ;~)
