Tornado hunter Greg Johnson captures twisters in Saskatchewan

He saw three touch town in 20 minutes near Regina

Another round of severe storms blasted through Saskatchewan Tuesday, and Tornado hunter Greg Johnson was there to catch a lot of the action.

"We spotted three tornadoes in a 20-minute span," he wrote on his blog Tuesday. "The first tornado touched down and stayed down for about eight minutes and tore through a farm yard. Several building were destroyed but fortunately the house was spared and no one was injured."

The twisters touched town in the late afternoon south of the Trans-Canada Highway and east of Balgonie, a small town about 30 minutes east of Regina. According to Environment Canada, a tornado touched down in that area around 4:55 p.m. CST.

"Oh jeez, I know I have said this too many times...but...I think I got my favorite shot of the year tonite," Tweeted Johnson Tuesday evening.

While Johnson started his career by leading a communications, marketing and advertising firm, he's now a full-time professional storm chaser. He put more than 50,000 kilometres on his Tornado Truck in 2011, intercepting and documenting storms across Canada and the U.S.

According to Environment Canada meteorologist David Phillips, Saskatchewan averages about 12 tornadoes a year.

One ripped through the town of Smeaton Saturday night destroying a man's house. CBC reports the farmer was inside the house and escaped with minor injuries when the house was thrown back about six metres after being ripped from its foundation.
