Vancouver man abandons Porsche on B.C. ferry, says he forgot where he parked

The owner of a 2012 Porsche boarded a ferry in British Columbia on Wednesday evening but when the boat docked, he found he couldn't quite remember where he parked his pricey car.

Therefore, like you might expect from any responsible owner of a vehicle worth tens of thousands of dollars, the Vancouver man shrugged his shoulders, trudged over to the street and boarded a bus home.

At least, that's the story police told the Victoria Times Colonist this week after staff on the Spirit of Vancouver Island ferry found the abandoned Porsche on board. Sorry, ferry staff, this one isn't a gift for your friendly service.

After calls to investigate, police impounded the vehicle and contacted the man to find out why he walked away from the car, according to the local newspaper. Police said the man maintained that he couldn't find the car.

The Times-Colonist reported the confusion caused more than an hour delay in the ferry's next departure time.

An abandoned luxury car might not have caused such a stir in Dubai, where Ferrari sports cars left to rust on the streets have become litter. Business Insider reported last fall that more than 3,000 abandoned luxury cars had been found in the United Arab Emirates the previous year.

There were 40 luxury cars in Dubai's impound lot at the end of April, impounded by the courts or because their foreign owners have racked up traffic fines and fled the country to avoid paying, according to Emirates 24/7.

"Some of the luxury cars are driven by young people who frankly do not realize the value of the cars they are driving," the news service wrote, paraphrasing a local police officer.
