Video offers front-row seat on world’s steepest roller coaster ‘Takabisha’

Last month, we showed you the construction time lapse of what would become the steepest roller coaster in the world.

And while it doesn't officially open to the public until July 16, the park unveiled it a few days ago and posted a heart-pumping video of what it is like to sit in the front row.

The ride is called Takabisha, which translates into 'dominant', looks like it will dominate many stomachs. Even the video looks scary.

Nestled at the foot of Mount Fuji at the Fuji-Q Highland Amusement Park, the ride is about one-kilometre long, features seven twists and takes just under two minutes. But the feature that will have everyone flocking to it is the 121-degree free fall.

The ride actually stops at the top right before the drop, so if you sit at the front, you look straight down over no track as if suspended in mid-air for a few seconds. Once the brakes release, riders accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in less than two seconds and experience weightlessness and G forces similar to those felt by fighter pilots.

Despite having the steepest drop in the world, Takabisha is far from being the fastest roller coaster. The Formula Rossa ride at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi holds that title with speeds of 240 km/h.

The ride cost more than $36 million (CDN) to build and will cost brave riders $12 on top of the $14 park admission fee. It is the 14th world record set by the amusement park.
