Driverless tractor runs amok in Ontario Walmart parking lot

It is not often people in large cities see tractors driving around parking lots, let alone see one moving without a driver.

Customers at a Walmart in the Toronto suburb of Richmond Hill watched from a safe distance as an unmanned John Deere tractor did circles through a parking lot.

The six-minute video captured by a witness shows the powerful vehicle with a snowplow attachment striking buildings, running over mediums and smashing into cars as it circles the mostly empty lot.

Emergency vehicles were on scene and drove around the tractor, but were unable to stop it until it ran into a light pole, at which point someone jumped inside and shut it off.

Since the video was posted last week it has been viewed more than 260,000 times.

Sgt. Gary Phillips of York Regional Police told the Toronto Star's Wheels.ca police believe someone started the tractor on purpose, put it in gear and left the scene.

He told the National Post they have no suspects and the damaged caused is expected to "be in the thousands."
