What we know about the six killed in Ottawa bus crash

A picture is slowly emerging of the six people killed in a deadly Ottawa bus crash and the effect the accident is having on the community. One day after a double-decker bus collided with a Via Rail train during a morning commute into Ottawa, police have identified the victims and loved ones are sharing their stories.

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their friends and families,” Ottawa police said on Thursday, as others joined in with their own support.

The first victim identified was 45-year-old bus driver Dave Woodard, who was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. Now, the remaining five have been identified. They are students, workers and government employees, cast together by a morning commute gone horribly wrong.

They have been identified as Ottawa residents Michael Bleakney, 57, Connor Boyd, 21, Karen Krzyzewski, 53, Kyle Nash, 21, and Rob More, 35.

Dave Woodard

The 45-year-old OC Transpo employee leaves behind a wife and daughter, as well as step-children whom he loved as his own. Widow Terry Woodard was vocal with her grief, posting in a Facebook message that Woodard was a great husband and dedicated worker.

“Today I lost my HUSBAND the love of my LIFE my best friend the father of my daughter and a great step DAD to the boys,” she wrote. “I don't know what to say...I want him back so much...MISS you BABY...be always in my prayers in my mind, but most of all in my heart....life is not the same without you here.”

Connor Boyd and Kyle Nash

Boyd and Nash, both 21, were longtime friends who both attended Carleton University. Boyd, a third-year English student, and Nash, a fourth-year multimedia design student, were mourned by the university on Thursday.

"On behalf of the students, faculty, staff and alumni of Carleton University, I wish to offer our deepest sympathies to the families of Carleton students Connor Boyd and Kyle Nash to all of their friends and classmates,” President Roseann O’Reilly Runte said in a statement.

The university is in the process of organizing a memorial service for the students and was offering counselling for those affected by their deaths.

Karen Krzyzewski

Karen Krzyzewski, 53, was a government employee who had worked at the Library and Archives Canada for nearly three decades. Her family released a statement through Ottawa police thanking the community for its support.

"We are very saddened by the loss of Karen. She was a gentle spirit who was caring and compassionate to others. She loved life to the fullest," the statement reads. "Karen was the mother of two young adult children. She is survived by her parents and a brother and two sisters. She will be mourned by family and many friends."

Karen was also celebrated as an artist by her family.

Michael Bleakney

Michael Bleakney, 57, was working as an engineer with Public Works and Government Services Canada. CBC News reports he was the father of four grown children and a choir member in his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Michael Bleakney was a true gentleman and a rock for the choir," Atlantic Voices said in a Facebook post. "He was our go-to man for all things Gaelic or New Brunswick. We will miss his energy, sense of fun, and wonderful intellect."
