Calgary Zoo’s breakdancing gorilla becomes online sensation

An 9-year-old lowland gorilla named Zola has become YouTube's latest star.

Zookeepers at the Calgary Zoo captured Zola "dancing" in his enclosure, splashing, stomping and spinning in a puddle.

"He loves to play in water and keepers regularly give him the opportunity to do so as part of the enrichment activities they plan and vary on a daily basis," an official news release said.

Two years ago, Zola and three other gorillas came to Calgary from New York's Bronx Zoo.

Western lowland gorillas are listed as "critically endangered," thanks to poaching and habitat loss in central Africa. Zola is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Gorilla Species Survival Plan.

The video was posted near the end of the zoo's two-month "Spotlight on Gorillas" which highlighted conservation challenges.

most of you,. I don;t think understand, that if he was left out in the wild, he probably would have been shot and killed by now. you guys are are bla bla bla, he should be in the wild. WHy? So he can get shot and killed?

jared you are SO RIGHT! i hate when i read ignorant comments on animals stories and people are like "free the animals". sure all of us who love animals would like nothing more to see them in their own habitat, but that's not an option these days, or most animals would be extinct. so when humans stop harming animals, either directly or by harming the environment, then the IGNORANT comments will stand, until then, i wish i could read a comment thread and hear from intelligent people.

On his way to "The Vegas Zoo" baby! Just set this gorilla up with a good choreographer. At least there, the cages are much more roomy and he might just find himself a little dance partner.

As someone who has recently gone through the "Zookeeper for a Day" program at the Calgary Zoo, I can tell you that the cage you see in this video is NOT the display cage...they use those cages only to feed the animals before turning them out into the public viewing areas. I got to give Zola and the other gorillas their morning fruit smoothies, fruit and vitamins myself when I was there and I can tell you, it was an absolute privilege and a thrill to be able to do so. Once they are finished, they are turned out into their indoor and outdoor enclosures, where they have ample room to engage in numerous physical activities and are given large "Kong"-like toys filled with treats of fruits and peanuts. If these magnificent animals were turned out into the wild, they'd have been poached long ago.

As for the giraffes, they, too have a large outdoor enclosure where they can move around at will and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine...they are only brought into their indoor enclosures at night, during inclement weather and to be given medications. The zookeepers take great pride in how they care for the animals in their charge...the three keepers I spent the day with are all long-time employees of the Calgary Zoo and their love for their animals is clearly evident in how they speak to and treat them.

For those of you saying you haven't been there in 30+ years, perhaps it's time for another visit. You will see that things are *very* different.

i don't agree with zoos in principal but they do mean survival for certain species. as for this enclosure, do some research people before you comment.... this is the inside part. the gorillas do have an outside part, full of climbing trees and rocks and more water. google calgary zoo gorilla enclosure.

A terrible thing to keep an Animal of Grand stature in such bad boring conditions, just to make a Buck. They should be Ashamed of themselves.

you should be ashamed that you opened your mouth about a place you clearly know nothing about
      • Fritzy 11 months ago
this is only the back holding area which they spend very very little time in...
maybe you should educate yourself before you make assumptions

Calgary zoo has not changed in 30 years I was there at 17 alot of the animals there had little room to move. I saw the space for the tallest animals in the world. what a hoot. They had little
room to move and they have such tall legs..Lots of poor conditions there for animals. Tbe
Calgary Zoo should be fined and closed for having such poor conditions for the animals.
Those animals should be out in the wild roaming around and getting lots of room to move instead of being in such cramped up poor conditions at the Zoo. Was told the zoo has not
changed in 30 years. They should be closed down and let those animals go to their natural
      enviroments..

We cage ourselves and I guess we have to cage every other creature too. Cute gorilla though.

Zoo visitors should insist the zoos turn their zoo into a sanctuary where both animals and
humans would be much more happier. This idea would save zoos a lot of money and the
natural the better because people will have something to write home about instead of
      becoming depressed.
