Calgary Zoo’s breakdancing gorilla becomes YouTube sensation

An 9-year-old lowland gorilla named Zola has become YouTube's latest star.

Zookeepers at the Calgary Zoo captured Zola "dancing" in his enclosure, splashing, stomping and spinning in a puddle.

"He loves to play in water and keepers regularly give him the opportunity to do so as part of the enrichment activities they plan and vary on a daily basis," an official news release said.

Two years ago, Zola and three other gorillas came to Calgary from New York's Bronx Zoo.

Western lowland gorillas are listed as "critically endangered," thanks to poaching and habitat loss in central Africa. Zola is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Gorilla Species Survival Plan.

The video was posted near the end of the zoo's two-month "Spotlight on Gorillas" which highlighted conservation challenges.
