Dogs who became inseparable at shelter get new home, together

This summer, two male dogs were dropped off separately at Orange County Animal Services, a shelter in central Florida. Almost instantly, the 3-year-old canines became inseparable.

On August 30, Second Chance Rescue shared a photo of the new friends on Facebook, concerned that the dogs would be euthanized within a week if they didn’t find new homes soon.

These 2 dogs entered the shelter separately and had never met. Yet, look how they comfort each other!! They are absolutely heartbroken & terrified. Who says dogs don’t feel, don’t know what is going on?! That is completely untrue, of course they feel!!!! OCAS is a very high kill shelter and they know the odds are stacked against them,” Second Chance Rescue posted.

Ronda Chewning saw the photo of the dogs and felt compelled to take action, despite initially having no plans to bring home one dog, let alone two. When she wrote on Facebook about her plans to visit the dogs, friends offered encouragement — and promises of financial support.

On GoFundMe, Chewning raised more than $7,800 to help cover medical expenses and the costs of caring for the dogs.

On September 4, the dogs, now named Ares and Zeus, went to live with Chewning, her daughter, Jamie, and their two other dogs, a miniature pinscher named Chanel and a Maltipoo named Princess.

"The big dogs were OK with our little dogs, and the little dogs welcomed them home," Chewning told the Huffington Post.

While the arrangement was originally intended to be temporary, Chewning is “really torn now" at the thought of saying goodbye to her new family members.

Whether the dogs stay with Chewning or find a forever home elsewhere, what is certain is that they’ll stay together.
