Dr. Russell Dohner, 85, charges just $5 a visit

In 1955, Dr. Russell Dohner began his practice in Rushville, Illinois. He charged just $2 a visit.

Fifty seven years later, 87-year-old Dohner still sees patients, seven days a week, out of that same store-front office.

"Even on Sunday," Dohner told KSDK. "I felt like there was always somebody who would be sick. So before I'd go to church, I'd come here."

He now charges $5 a visit, the same fee since the '70s. He insists the fee is the actual price and isn't subsidized.

"That's the way I've always done it," said the doctor who still keeps handwritten records on index cards. "There are quite a few people who come to see my because they can't afford anybody else. I can help."

"You know, frankly, I've never spent much money for going on trips or stuff like that," he said.

According to The Daily Nightly, Dohner doesn't turn away patients:

"Sometimes those who are unable to pay his fee have arrived with fresh baked cookies," reported NBC News correspondent Kevin Tibbles.
