Jeopardy! contestant reaches trivia success through training

He bested Ken Jennings' one-day record by raking in $77,000 in a single game of Jeopardy! But don't call his success "luck." He trained to win.

Roger Craig, who recently wowed on a Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions game by betting everything on two back-to-back Daily Doubles, took his game-show training seriously. As a result, he went from $9,000 to $18,000 to $36,000 in two turns.

"No one has hit both Daily Doubles, on back-to-back selections, for all-in bets. And $18,000, as far as anyone can remember, is the biggest single Daily Double, ever," Esquire's Chris Jones writes of Craig's incredible win.

    Watch the history-making moment here.

The superstar contestant's trivia skills, Jones writes, were honed "by following a rigorous course of self-analysis and study, focusing his energies on the blind spots in his knowledge and training his brain to think quickly."

This computer scientist from Delaware developed a web tool to help him track and analyze his practice-question performances. His training app took him through thousands of archived questions and answers.

Watch Craig explain his knowledge tracking tool below.

Luck comes when preparation meets opportunity. Craig and his game-show fortune prove that yet again.

They should play this game in Canada where lottery or game winnings are not taxed.

I know there have been Canadians on the show, but not sure if they have to hand over part of their winnings to the IRS. That would suck.

yes kid, they paid tax on money earned there, like casino wins.

In canada the payday would be much less so, it wouldnt change much

I was watching this episode live and thought this guy is nuts, but he got them both and broke some record doing it.....Good for you, man....a brain is a terrible thing to waste...

Now this interesting. I watched all those championship games and he DID NOT make over $77,000 in one game. He did make $50,000 in a single game. He asked Alex what the record was but he didn't do it. Now if you count the $250,000 that he won on the final championship then well...

He did win $77,000 but it was a while back on the regular shows. He was messing with Alex because he is the one that actually set the record.

One very clever guy. Why do some people feel the need to knock him? Certainly not jealousy.

AI is here - without the computer, this wouldn't have been possible.

This guy seems to have spent a lot of time to win $77,000. You would think with his brain power he would use it to make tons of money. Why doesn't Apple hire him?

Apple isn't hiring - I already applied!! LOL

77,000 is pretty good for 30 minutes, I would say.

And that was only his one day winnings...I believe he won a lot more in total.

I watched this man on TV. He seems not only smart but a very nice, down-to-earth guy. Not a snob by any means, just a plain nice person. God bless you Craig, have a good life and a winning eternity.

Even if I trained like him for as long and as hard, I don't think I could do it.
