John Cleese responds to YouTube commenters

John Cleese recently responded — quite articulately and hilariously — to "your futile" YouTube comments in a video posted by Monty Python's YouTube account.

Yes, comments are being read. And, yes, some of them are stupid. (But stupid people can't recognize stupidity, Cleese quickly forgives.)

Watch his witty responses — and learn what elderberries taste like — below.

What do you feel about this article?

      Cleese is brilliant as usual.

One little error though.... he meant to say "elderflower cordial".... that's the one that's light and fragrant, and the British like to use it by diluting it as a drink, or in their cuisine (they sprinkle it on fruit, for example). Elderflowers are also dried and used as a tea. Incidentally, Elderflowers in the wild smell ever so slightly of.... wait for it.... cat urine!.... seriously...

Elderberries, on the other hand, do not have an unpleasant odour. They are what you get when you allow the flowers to mature, and the fruit to ripen. The berries are plentiful and quite sour - thus they need significant sweetening, but when they are, they are excellent as a jam or jelly - with a taste related to cassis, blackberry or blueberry jams. Elderberries can also be used in liqueur (delicious, I can assure you) or made into wine.

How do I know all this? I have three Elderberry plants on my property, and have used both flowers and fruit in all these concoctions. This was a commonly used plant in the early 20th century in North America, but no longer. That's a shame, as there are people (myself included) who say the Elderberry jam is the best jam they've ever tasted, and ditto for the liqueur.

after following Cleese's humor for decades, I would think he said what he meant. if you listen to the begining he also introduced himself as Michael Palin

:) I remember John Cleese on the Alberta film festival I believe, where he said that when he was younger he thought that the world was made up of mostly sane people and only contained pockets of insanuity here and there. But as he got holder he started to think that actually it was the reverse that sadly seems to be true. On the same interview I think, he mentionned about his old mother calling him to complain of her ailments and he told her that well if it's ok with her he knows people who would make her disapear. Hillarious. I wish people would take things on the 2nd. and 3rd. degree a bit more. Gee we won't get out of life alive anyway so we might as well enjoy it without taking ourselves too seriously all the while striving just to be decent human beings and see the other guy's point of view and show one another some tollerance for what is not exactly like us. Great man, smart man, as are the members of the Python troup. Also love Michael Palin's Around The World in 80 Days. Long life you all and thanks for the the much slanted views of ourselves.

Didn't anyone catch how he introduced himself? "Hello, I'm Michael Palen.." Wry humour at its driest. Still, Cleese is the master of understated humour, and he doesn't disappoint.

Sorry, dude, but it's actually Michael Palin. (No relation to the Psycho from Alaska, thank God.)

ahh yes... every once in a while it is nice to hear some common sense and logic. not all the time of course, because then there would be nothing for some people to do or say.

Thank you Mr Cleese! I grew up with MP and nothing to this day rivals it. As a drama student in high school we had to study MP and try to learn the fine art of absurdism. They make it look so easy, but its far from it. It takes intelligence and a keen sense of what others will find funny. The MP gang is brilliant! Can't wait to see the new movie that I hear is in the works. ps: your mother was a hamster and your father was a vacuum cleaner. Amen.

I love John Cleese....!!!! Fawlty Towers was hilarious...I'm so old that I remember Monty Python had a record. (Flying Circus?) Yes a 33 lp. It was so funny. It left everything to your imagination . Some of the best stuff they ever did i think...There was "The elk", "Eric the half bee", the contest where things were tossed off a roof top and if you caught them you won. (Think major appliances) Even now thinking about those sketches I have a little grin on my face....Classic British comedy...Thank you all for the laughs over the years.
