Manitoba defends “Slurpee capital of the world” title

For the 12th year in a row, Manitoba has been named the world's Slurpee capital.

Manitoba has the highest average number of Slurpee cups sold per store in a region.

In 2009, corporate representatives from 7-Eleven's head office presented Winnipeg mayor Sam Katz with a Slurpee trophy cup to celebrate their 10th consecutive title.

Since 1966, nearly 6.5 billion Slurpee drinks have been purchased worldwide.

With 40 stores in Winnipeg, 40,000 free drinks are available to the city that can't get enough of that "brain freeze." In total, 7-Eleven is prepared to give away 466,000 free beverages.

There's no trophy for Manitoba this year, just commendation from an official spokesperson, who "praised Winnipeg and Manitoba for their love affair with the frosty, sugary beverage."

Calgary and Detroit ranked second and third respectively in the race for the Slurpee-capital title.
