Meet Carolyn Hopkins, the woman behind the voice of 200 airports

Carolyn Hopkins - you don't know her name, but you probably know her voice.

The 63-year-old woman from northern Maine is the voice of more than 200 airports worldwide. She's also the official spokeswoman of the New York City subway. And she works from home.

Hopkins records her clear, friendly soothing voice-overs from the comfort of her modest home office, announcing flight delays, giving safety advice, and welcoming arriving passengers.

"Traveling can be such a bummer these days that people need a friendly voice," Hopkins told CBS.

Next time you're at the airport, listen for Hopkins.

Well, it's definitely good to "hear" that she's a real human voice rather than a robot! ;)

It's not always about the money but the love of the job.

It's ironic and amusing that she worked from a beautiful isolated place recording messages for busy subways and airports! ;-)

London's Tube voice is still the best one though. "Mind the gap" got stuck in my head for the longest time!

I wonder how the GAP likes this .....
      • cobbler's kid 6 months ago
Or is GAP paying her to say that. Good move!
      • OttawaYBC 6 months ago
@Moose, the 'Mind the Gap' woman for London's tube also does Ottawa's O-Train stop announcements - in both English and French.

Just got back from Florida and recognized that same voice in the United States airports as is here in Canada. I was then curious about her. And 'wadaya' know, here she is !! Serendipitous eh!

The white zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in the red zone.

Oh my goodness this woman just brightened my day with her story. For a woman to enjoy this so much is amazing and it really seems like she just wants people to think that the little voice in the air port or train station is very pleasant and isn't like really weird and rude. :)

Next time I am at the airport, I know who to thank for the announcements. Thanks Carolyn!
