Puppy freed from drain pipe in dramatic rescue

Animal lovers, this story is for you.

A tiny four-week-old puppy managed to crawl through a basement grate of his owner's house in west Detroit. The dachshund-pug mix was separated from its mother, and got stuck in the underground drain pipe where he remained overnight.

"It was crying, and I was crying all night, I felt so bad," the dog's owner, who asked not to be identified, told WXYZ News.

The next morning, the Humane Society's emergency rescue department came to the puppy's rescue. Unable to see the dog, rescuers used a stethoscope to track the pup's location.

What happened next was an elaborate rescue, caught on camera, which included an excavator:

"They dug a 7-foot-deep trench to free the canine, which traveled about 15 feet from the drain opening and became wedged within the pipe that connects to a storm drain line beneath the house," UPI reported.

    Watch the heartwarming rescue below.

The "cold and dehydrated" dog was brought to a Detroit animal shelter for care, but was soon reunited with its mother. ABC News reports that the dog is doing well.

Heroes with big hearts - kudos to them all for saving this little pup!

Seriously, how are they HEROES? They didn't risk their well-being at all.
Also, it's a puppy. Not like they're in short supply...

Mp, you should be stuck in a pipe.

Mp is quite right. Puppies are sold in such high volumes you could say the mothers almost have trouble supplying the demand.

Great story. Heroes all, in my book.

        Heroes? For digging a hole?
By that logic, I'm a hero b/c I build a fence last summer.
      • Gary 3 months ago
Again, they are heroes not because they dug a hole but because they saved a life. Something you can't seem to grasp.

Finally some good news. I would have tore the whole house up to save him. Dogs are wonderful creatures that give unconditional love.

Great story...brought tears to my eyes.

It amazes me that some heartless people commenting here can still find something negative to say.

Dogs are just another species which humans have over-breeded to the point where +90% of them get mistreated. Like low-income families who insist on having 5 kids, they become nothing more than a burden to society. We needs laws to protect people from these animals. They get to run around freely, crap where ever they want, and allowed to cross-breed all they want. I shouldn't have to clean up after a dog I don't have. I should be able to walk on a nature trail and not see tons of doggy bags tossed into the woods hanging from bushes!!! I don't want to have a bunch of off leash mutts coming up to me and making my clothes dirty because their owners can't control the animals!!!

Oh, that brings tears to the eyes ... poor wee thing didn't have a chance ... his cries kept the spirit of hope alive... it was obvious how hard the rescuers worked to save the pup's life, how concerned they were. I hope the owners don't have a huge bill, putting their drainage back together. Had the pup not made it - they'd be haunted with a sad memory. This is truly a great ending !!!! :)

Very happy the puppy was saved. You know its going to cost the family alot of money . But they care enough for the little guy to do so. You don't always see that every day. A lessor person would have let it go rather than paying the money to retreave it.

You can see the mother was worried look how she's stretched out straining her self to check on her little baby. Her eyes intensified looking at her little pup sniffing away checking the baby out. Thankfully all ended well.
