Widow’s ring returned 70 years after husband’s death

Before her husband Robert left for war, Betty McAleenan, now 94, gave him her class ring.

In 1944, Robert's plane crashed over Papua New Guinea. Betty, who lives in Wyoming, never saw her ring again — until this week.

Seventy years after her sweetheart died in World War II, Betty was reunited with the ring she hoped would keep them together despite the distance.

"I gave it to him so that way we could be together," she said through tears on Sunday as she held the ring for the first time in decades.

"He was a wonderful, wonderful guy," she added. "And I fell madly in love like all people do at that age."

Conflicting media reports identify Betty's husband as both Staff Sergeant Robert Greebull and Lieutenant Colonel Robert Fisk.

Robert carried Betty's ring with him through 38 successful missions as a bomber gunner. He died on his 39th. It took more than 40 years before the wreckage of his plane was discovered, and another 30 for the ring to be returned to its original owner.

Betty told WKOW that with the return of the ring, she finally feels some closure.
